House 12
The inner world and retreat
The twelfth house describes your inner life and what happens in retreat: chosen solitude, dreams, spirituality, devotion. It also covers what you don’t show, sometimes not even to yourself.
The twelfth house is the last in the chart, the one just before the Ascendant: what takes shape before it appears. It covers places of retreat, hospitals, monasteries, backstage areas, but above all the inner world, the unconscious, what you carry without always knowing it. Tradition long described it as a house of trials; today it’s read more as the house of rest, compassion and spiritual life. Planets in the twelfth house work behind the scenes. They often bring deep sensitivity, a need for solitude to recharge, a talent for helping without being seen. An empty twelfth house doesn’t mean a thin inner life: its cusp and ruling planet show how you withdraw and recharge.
