The first house, the house of the Ascendant, describes how you step into the world: your bearing, your first reflexes, the impression you leave before you’ve even said a word.
The first house is the front door of the chart. It covers the body, appearance, your spontaneous temperament, the way you approach something new: the first day at a new job, the first evening at a party full of strangers. Planets in the first house show immediately. Mars gives a frank, quick manner, Venus a softness that draws people in, Saturn a reserve that commands respect. They color your personality in a very visible way, almost without your noticing. An empty first house is not empty of meaning: the sign on the Ascendant and the planet that rules it then tell the story of how you come across. Look at where that ruling planet sits; it often points to the area of life that defines you.
