The numbers, one by one
- Life pathThe sum of every digit of your date of birth, reduced to a single digit; 11, 22 and 33 are kept.
- Expression numberThe sum of every letter of your full birth name, each letter worth 1 to 9.
- Soul urge numberThe sum of the vowels alone in your full birth name (A, E, I, O, U and Y).
- Personality numberThe sum of the consonants alone in your full birth name.
- Birthday numberThe day of the month you were born, 1 to 31, as it is.
- Personal yearYour birth day and month added to the current calendar year, then reduced: a nine-year cycle.
- Karmic debt13, 14, 16 or 19 when they appear in the working of a core number, just before it is reduced.
- Karmic lessonA digit from 1 to 9 that no letter of your birth name gives.
- CompatibilityTwo life paths, seventy-eight pairings.
- Mirror hours22:22, 11:11, 12:21: what the tradition reads in them.
How Lunarie computes
Each letter is worth a digit according to the Pythagorean table, the most widely used: A, J and S are 1, B, K and T are 2, and so on up to I and R, which are 9. Accents and ligatures are undone (É becomes E, Œ becomes OE); hyphens and apostrophes separate words.
For a name number, each word is reduced, then the words are added and the total reduced in turn. 11, 22 and 33 are kept for core numbers and pinnacles, never for challenges. A karmic debt is noted when the last total of a core number, just before its final reduction, is 13, 14, 16 or 19; a single word never carries one. Y always counts as a vowel.
The whole method, the schools that disagree and their figures
Where numerologists disagree, we say so: for the life path we add every digit of the date; when the other method (day, month and year reduced separately) gives another number, the chart shows you both.
Common questions
How do I calculate my life path number?
Add up every digit of your date of birth, then reduce the total to a single digit. For 14 July 1990: 1 + 4 + 0 + 7 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 31, then 3 + 1 = 4. Totals of 11, 22 and 33 are kept as they are.
Should I use my birth name or my current name?
Your birth name, with every first name on your birth certificate: that is what the tradition uses for the expression, soul urge and personality numbers. A married name or pen name can be worked out separately, for comparison.
Is Y a vowel in numerology?
Schools disagree. Lunarie always counts Y as a vowel, as most French numerologists do, and says so in every working. If your name has a Y, your soul urge and personality numbers depend on it.
What do the master numbers 11, 22 and 33 mean?
They are the only totals left unreduced when they come up for a core number. The tradition reads them as a more demanding version of 2, 4 and 6: more potential, and more tension to carry.
